According to the famous art critic André Breton, with Chagall the metaphor makes its triumphal entrance into modern painting. Chagall's works overturn all the spatial planes and free objects from the weight of gravity, thus breathing life into a world that is both pictorial and poetic, and that tears down "the barrier of elements and rules", thereby creating paintings that are at once poetic and musical compositions.
